Sleep Well
Good quality sleep makes you mentally fitter
Sleep better to perform at your best
You know that feeling when you just haven’t had enough sleep. You’re foggy, you can’t think straight, your resilience is low. Things that you can normally deal with easily turn into massive problems. A lack of sleep can really have a negative impact on your mental fitness levels.
To perform at your best, you need to be fuelled up – with enough water, good nutrition and of course sleep. Consider whether your thoughts and emotions are the things that are stopping you sleeping. If that’s the case, try and address them using other exercises like Problem Solving or Body Relaxation Techniques.
How to sleep well
- Try and get into a routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day to set your internal clock.
- Make your environment as calm and tidy as it can be. You’ll associate the space with feeling peaceful. It’s not always possible, but dark, quiet, and cool is ideal.
- Avoid screens before you plan to go to sleep as the bright light is alerting and can delay sleep onset. Read a book or listen to relaxing music instead. Some people find listening to ambient noise or even the low mumble of a podcast helpful to fall asleep to.
- Limit your alcohol intake. It’s a stimulant and will often wake you up in the middle of the night.
- Try and incorporate some sort of exercise into your daily routine as research shows that regular activity helps with sleep quality. But avoid strenuous exercise in the hours before bed.
